BAQUEBA

Carnival Music of Northeastern Brazil

Based in Tokyo, this grassroots percussion ensemble derives inspiration from Maracatu Nação, a traditional performance genre from the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. The result is a fluid and free, yet ultraheavy sound. While the group pursues a uniquely Japanese repertoire, many of its members have extensive firsthand experience of Carnival in Pernambuco. The group also holds workshops about once a month. New members who would like to play the drums together are welcome.
