Tokyo Nakano Mahai Eisa

Eisa

In Okinawa, on the night of the Bon Festival according to the lunar calendar, youth associations from each district parade through their neighborhoods while dancing to honor the spirits of their ancestors. Highlights include the powerful drumming of the young men (ikiga), the charming dances of the young women (inagu), and the shouts of encouragement (fēshi). The group Tokyo Nakano Mahai Eisa was formed in 2005 and is based in Tokyo’s Nakano City. Mahai is the name of the wind that blows in Okinawa before the start of the rainy season and is said to bring an abundant harvest.
