About Inaba no Kirinjishimai

Eastern Tottori prefecture and northwest Hyogo prefecture are home to approximately Kirinjishimai figures that are dedicated to shrines. The Kirinjishimai is performed by two dancers who wear a carved head shaped like a mythical kirin, which has a long face and horns, and is often gold in color. Accompanying the kirin is a minder called a shojo, who wears a red mask. It has been recognized as a Japanese Heritage and National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.

About the Group

The Association of Inaba Kirinjishi Dancers was founded in February 2017 to support the Kirinjishimai activities that have been passed down for generations in the Inaba region of Tottori prefecture. It was made up of 51 Kirinjishimai preservation groups that pass down and nurture traditional culture. The association engages in three main activities: supporting preservation groups, training successors, and doing public relations.
